Why some downloaded videos have no sound
A silent download has one of a few causes — a separate audio track, a GIF, a muted upload or the player itself. How to tell which one it is, and what fixes it.

You saved a video, pressed play, and heard nothing. Before assuming the download failed, it helps to know that silent videos have only a handful of causes, and that each one leaves a recognisable trace. This guide goes through them in order of how often they occur.
Cause 1: the sound lives in a separate file
Many platforms stream picture and sound as two separate tracks and combine them only in their own player. Reddit does this for all its hosted videos, and Facebook and Vimeo do it for many. A tool that grabs just the video track produces a file that plays perfectly and has no audio at all. The guide on HLS and DASH explains the technique behind this.
How to tell: the video comes from one of these platforms and the original clearly had sound.
Fix: use a downloader that fetches both tracks and joins them. Videospeichern does this automatically: on Reddit, Facebook, Vimeo and other platforms that split their streams, the MP4 you save contains both. The guide on downloading Reddit videos with sound shows the process on the platform where the problem is most common.
Cause 2: it was a GIF
Social networks convert uploaded GIFs into short MP4 videos because MP4 is far more efficient. GIFs never had sound, so these videos are silent by design. X, Reddit and Bluesky all do this.
How to tell: the post was labelled as a GIF, or the clip is a short loop.
Fix: none needed. The file is exactly what was posted. Videospeichern marks such items as GIFs and offers no MP3 row for them, because there is no audio to convert.
Cause 3: the original is silent
Some videos simply have no sound: screen recordings made without audio, clips muted before upload, many animations, and videos where the creator removed the soundtrack, sometimes because of a music-rights claim.
How to tell: open the post in the platform's own app with the sound on. If it is silent there too, the download is correct.
Fix: none. Videospeichern shows "This attachment carries no audio track" on the result card when a video has no sound.
Cause 4: the sound was removed by the platform
Platforms sometimes mute a video after it was published, most often because of a copyright claim on the music. The post stays up but plays silently, or plays with sound in some countries and silently in others.
How to tell: the post plays silently in the app, possibly with a notice that audio was removed.
Fix: none from the downloader's side. What the platform no longer serves cannot be saved.
Cause 5: the player, not the file
Sometimes the file is fine and the problem is playback:
- The phone is on silent. On an iPhone the ring/silent switch or the Action button mutes some players. Turn the volume up while the video plays.
- The player's own mute button is on. Many gallery apps and browsers start videos muted.
- An old player does not support the audio format. Nearly all devices play AAC audio in MP4. If one player stays silent, try another, such as VLC.
- The file is incomplete. An interrupted download can cut off the audio. Delete the file and save it again.
How to tell: play the same file in a second app, or on another device.
Cause 6: the wrong item in a multi-item post
In a post with several items, such as a carousel, some items can be silent while others have sound. Make sure you saved the item you meant. Each item on the result card has its own rows, and only items with sound offer an MP3.
Quick diagnosis
- Does the original have sound in the platform's own app? If not, the download is correct.
- Is it a GIF or a short loop? Then it never had sound.
- Does the result card say the item has no audio track? Then the platform delivers no audio for it.
- Does the file stay silent in two different players? If yes and the original has sound, save it again; if it plays in one player, the other player is the problem.
Only want the sound?
If the sound is what you are after, the MP3 row gives you the audio track alone. It appears only when there is an audio track to convert. The guide on MP4 vs MP3 explains when each format fits. To try it, paste a link into the Reddit video downloader or the Facebook video downloader, two platforms where the separate-track problem is common.
