MP4 vs MP3 — which format to choose when you save a video
MP4 keeps picture and sound, MP3 keeps only the sound. What each format is, how big the files get, what is lost, and which one fits which job.

Every result card in Videospeichern offers two kinds of rows: video qualities, which give you an MP4, and one row labelled MP3 · audio only. The choice sounds obvious, and often it is. But the two formats behave differently in ways that matter for file size, quality and what you can do with the result. This guide explains both.
What an MP4 is
MP4 is a container: a file format that can hold several streams at once, typically one video stream and one audio stream, plus some information about how to play them together. On social platforms the picture inside is usually compressed with a codec called H.264, sometimes with a newer one; the sound is usually AAC.
When you save a video as MP4 with Videospeichern, you get the streams the platform itself published. They are not decoded and compressed again. If the platform stores the picture and the sound separately, the two are copied side by side into one MP4, again without re-encoding. This is why the MP4 you receive is exactly as sharp as the video on the platform, never sharper and never worse.
MP4 plays on practically everything: phones, computers, smart TVs, video editors and messaging apps.
What an MP3 is
MP3 is a pure audio format. It holds one stream of sound and nothing else. It is decades old, which is its strength: every device that can play audio at all can play an MP3.
When you choose the MP3 row, Videospeichern takes the audio track of the video and converts it into MP3 on request, while the file is streamed to you. Unlike the MP4, this is a real conversion. The platform's audio is usually AAC, not MP3, so it has to be decoded and encoded again in the new format. The converted file is then handed over and not kept.
What changes in quality
MP4: nothing. You get the original streams.
MP3: a little, in theory. Converting from one compressed audio format to another always loses some information. At the bitrates used for downloads, the difference is inaudible for speech and hard to hear for most music on ordinary headphones. If you edit audio professionally and want the untouched original, save the MP4 and extract the AAC track in your editor instead; the MP4 contains the audio exactly as the platform delivered it.
The quality of the sound can never be better than what the platform stored. A voice recorded on a phone in a noisy room stays a noisy phone recording, whatever the format.
File sizes
Video is by far the larger part of any clip. For the same length, an MP4 is usually many times larger than an MP3 of its sound. The result card shows an estimated size for each video quality, so you can see what you are about to download. The MP3 is small by comparison.
This makes MP3 attractive when storage is tight, or when you want to keep a long talk or a podcast recorded on video on your phone.
When to choose MP4
- You want to watch the video later, offline.
- You want to keep a copy of your own post exactly as it was published.
- You need the picture: a tutorial, a sports clip, a recipe.
- You plan to edit the video, including its sound.
When to choose MP3
- You only care about the sound: a song, a speech, an interview, a sound effect.
- You want to listen on a device or in an app that handles audio better than video, like a music player or a car stereo.
- Storage or data is limited and the picture adds nothing.
When there is no MP3 row
Some videos have no sound at all: GIFs, many screen recordings, short animations and clips uploaded muted. The result card tells you that the item carries no audio track, and there is nothing to convert. The guide on why some downloaded videos have no sound explains the common causes, including the ones where the sound does exist but lives in a separate file.
Photo posts have no MP3 row for the pictures themselves. If a slideshow comes with music, an audio row may appear separately, depending on the platform.
Other formats you may meet
- GIF: platforms such as X convert uploaded GIFs into silent MP4 loops. You receive that MP4, which is usually smaller and sharper than a GIF of the same clip.
- M4A: an audio-only file in the MP4 family, usually containing AAC. Videospeichern delivers MP3 instead because it plays everywhere.
Quick answer
If in doubt, take the MP4. It contains everything, and you can always get the sound out of it later. Take the MP3 when you are sure you only want to listen. For step-by-step instructions, the guide on extracting audio as MP3 covers the audio side, and the TikTok video downloader or the X video downloader are good places to try both.
