How to download Bluesky videos and images

Bluesky streams video in small segments, so right-click saving does not work. How to save a public Bluesky video as one MP4, plus its images and sound.

By Videospeichern editorial team5 min read

Bluesky is an open network, and anyone can read public posts without an account. Saving a video from it is still harder than it looks: right-clicking a Bluesky video offers no useful "save" option, and browser extensions often come back with a tiny text file instead of a clip. This guide explains why, and how to get a normal MP4.

Why Bluesky videos are hard to save

Bluesky plays video with HLS, a streaming format that was designed for adaptive playback rather than for downloading. A Bluesky video is not one file. It is a playlist that points at many short segments, each a few seconds long, often in several qualities. The player fetches the segments one after another and switches quality depending on your connection.

When you try to save "the video", what your browser can actually reach is the playlist, a small text file with the extension .m3u8. Opening it in a video player may or may not work, and it will stop working once the links in it expire. To get a real file, the segments have to be downloaded and put back together in order. The explainer on HLS and DASH covers this in more detail.

What Videospeichern does with it

When you paste a Bluesky post into the Bluesky video downloader, Videospeichern reads the post's playlist, lists the qualities it contains and, when you save one, fetches its segments and joins them into one MP4 as the download runs. The picture and sound are copied as they are, not re-encoded, so the file is exactly as sharp as what you saw in the app.

Because the segments have to be collected first, a Bluesky download can take a little longer to start than a download from a platform that serves a single file. The countdown after you tap Save covers most of that wait.

Step by step

  1. Copy the post link. In the Bluesky app or on bsky.app, open the post's menu (the three dots), choose Share and then Copy link to post. The link looks like bsky.app/profile/<handle>/post/<id>.
  2. Paste it. Put the link into the paste bar on the downloader page. The Bluesky chip confirms it was recognised. Tap Save.
  3. Choose what to save. The card lists the video qualities from the playlist with estimated sizes, an MP3 · audio only row, and any images attached to the post.
  4. Save. Tap the Save button of the item you want. After the countdown the download starts by itself.

Links that name the author with a did:plc:… identifier instead of a handle work too. Both forms point to the same post, and Videospeichern resolves either one.

Images and multi-image posts

A Bluesky post can carry up to four images. Each appears on its own card at its original resolution, with a Save button. If a post has several images, Save all as ZIP downloads them together in one archive. On a phone, the Files app on iOS and the file manager on Android can both open a ZIP and extract its contents.

Audio only

For a talk, a song or a voice note posted as a video, choose MP3 · audio only. The soundtrack is taken from the same stream and converted into an MP3 file on request. If the video has no sound at all, the card says so and there is no MP3 option. The guide on extracting audio as MP3 explains what quality to expect.

GIFs on Bluesky

Animated GIFs posted to Bluesky are stored as short videos, much like on other networks. You receive them as an MP4 loop without sound, which every modern player can play and repeat.

What cannot be saved

  • Posts the author restricted. Bluesky lets people limit who sees some content to signed-in users. Such posts are not visible to Videospeichern, which does not sign in.
  • Posts from accounts that blocked the viewer or were taken down. They are not served publicly.
  • Deleted posts. Once a post is gone, so is its video.
  • External link cards. A post that links to an article or to a video on another site does not contain that video. Paste the original link instead, if it comes from one of the supported platforms.

On phones

In Safari on iPhone, the MP4 lands in the Downloads folder of the Files app. Open it, tap Share and Save Video to add it to Photos. On Android, Chrome saves it to the Download folder, where gallery apps pick it up. The guide on finding downloaded videos on iPhone and Android walks through both.

Respecting the people who posted

Bluesky's openness makes it easy to read and save posts. It does not change who owns them. Keep what you save for your own use, or ask the author before sharing it elsewhere. For the basics, read whether downloading social media videos is legal.
