The most common question after a successful download is not about the download at all: "Where is my video?" Phones keep files that come from a browser apart from the photos and videos you take with the camera. This guide shows where the file goes on an iPhone and on Android, how to get it into your photo library, and what to check when it seems to be missing.

iPhone and iPad

Where Safari saves files

Safari saves downloads into a folder called Downloads in the Files app. By default that folder is in iCloud Drive. You can change the location in Settings → Safari → Downloads (on recent iOS versions under Settings → Apps → Safari → Downloads), for example to On My iPhone, which keeps files local and does not use iCloud storage.

The quickest way to the file right after downloading: tap the download arrow in Safari's address bar, then the small magnifying glass next to the file. Files opens with the video selected.

Moving a video into Photos

The Photos app does not show the Downloads folder. To add the video to your library:

  1. Open the video in the Files app so it plays.
  2. Tap the Share button.
  3. Choose Save Video.

The video now appears in Photos under Recents. For an image, the option is called Save Image. You can then delete the file from Downloads to avoid keeping two copies.

When Save Video is missing

If the share sheet offers no Save Video option, the file is not a format Photos accepts. The usual causes are:

  • The download is incomplete. An interrupted download leaves a partial file. Delete it and download again.
  • It is a ZIP. Tap the ZIP in Files to expand it into a folder, then save the videos or images inside.
  • It is an MP3. Photos only stores images and videos. Audio files stay in Files, where you can play them, or can be added to a music app that imports files.

Other browsers on iPhone

Chrome, Firefox and other browsers on iOS save into the same Files app, sometimes into their own subfolder. Look under Browse in Files, or search for the file name.

Android

Where Chrome saves files

Chrome on Android saves to the Download folder in your phone's internal storage. You can reach the file in several ways:

  • the notification Chrome shows when the download is complete,
  • Chrome's menu (three dots) → Downloads,
  • the phone's Files app (called "Files by Google", "My Files" or similar depending on the manufacturer), under Downloads.

Other browsers such as Firefox, Samsung Internet or Edge also save into the Download folder by default, and each has its own downloads list in its menu.

Most gallery apps show the Download folder automatically.

  • Google Photos: open Collections (or Library), then On this device, and look for Download. Videos there are on your phone but are not backed up until you switch on backup for that folder.
  • Samsung Gallery and other manufacturer galleries: the Download folder usually appears as its own album.

If you want the video to appear in your main camera timeline, move it into the DCIM/Camera folder with your Files app. Most file managers offer Move to in the file's menu.

SD cards and work profiles

Some phones let browsers save to an SD card. If the file is not in internal storage, check the Download folder on the card. Phones with a separate work profile keep the work browser's downloads apart; look in the Files app of the same profile.

Computers

On Windows, macOS and Linux, browsers save into your user's Downloads folder unless you set a different location. Press Ctrl+J in Chrome, Edge or Firefox on Windows and Linux, Cmd+Shift+J in Chrome on a Mac, or Option+Cmd+L in Safari to see recent downloads. The guide on saving X videos on a computer has more on desktop downloads.

Checklist when a file seems missing

  1. Did the download actually start? After the countdown in Videospeichern, the browser should show a download. If not, tap Didn't start? Download again.
  2. Look in the browser's own download list first. It shows where the file went and whether it completed.
  3. Search the Files app for the file name. Videospeichern's file names contain the platform and the post id.
  4. On iPhone, check whether the Downloads location is iCloud Drive or On My iPhone.
  5. On Android, check internal storage and the SD card.
