How to save TikTok photo posts and slideshows

TikTok photo posts are not videos, so video tools fail on them. How to save every picture of a TikTok slideshow, one by one or as a single ZIP.

TikTok photo posts look like videos while you watch them: pictures slide past to music, and the post sits in the same feed as every clip. Underneath, they are something else entirely. A photo post is a set of still images plus a sound, and TikTok's app builds the slideshow on your screen. That difference is why so many "TikTok downloaders" fail on them or return a single blurry frame. This guide explains what is going on and how to save the pictures properly.

How to recognise a photo post

A photo post usually shows small dots or a counter indicating several images, and you can swipe sideways through the pictures. The post's link also looks different: where a video's address contains /video/, a photo post's address contains /photo/. When in doubt, just paste the link; Videospeichern tells you what the post contains.

Why video tools get it wrong

A tool that expects a video asks TikTok for a video file. For a photo post there is none, so the tool either reports an error or grabs whatever preview image it can find, usually the first picture at a reduced size. The individual photos, at the size they were uploaded, are only found by reading the post as what it is: a gallery.

Saving the photos

  1. Copy the link. In the TikTok app, tap Share on the photo post, then Copy link. The short vm.tiktok.com link is fine.
  2. Paste it. Open the TikTok video downloader and paste the link. When the TikTok chip appears, tap Save.
  3. Look at the cards. Instead of a list of video qualities you see one card per image, numbered in the order of the slideshow. Each card shows the image and a Save button with its dimensions.
  4. Save what you need. Tap Save on single images, or tap Save all as ZIP to get every picture in one archive.

After a short countdown the download starts. If nothing happens, tap Didn't start? Download again.

Opening the ZIP

A ZIP is one file that contains all the images.

  • iPhone: Safari saves the ZIP into the Downloads folder of the Files app. Tap it and Files expands it into a folder. Open the folder, tap Select, choose the images, then Share → Save Images to add them to Photos.
  • Android: open the ZIP in the Files app and tap Extract. The pictures appear in a new folder, where your gallery app finds them.
  • Computer: double-click the ZIP to open or extract it.

If you only want two or three pictures from a long slideshow, saving them one by one from their cards is quicker than handling a ZIP.

What about the music?

The sound under a photo post is a separate audio track that TikTok plays while the pictures slide by. Whether an audio row appears on the result card depends on what TikTok delivers for that particular post. When it is there, MP3 · audio only saves the sound as an MP3. When it is not, the card shows only the images.

Keep in mind that the music on photo posts is often a licensed track from TikTok's sound library. Saving it for yourself is one thing; using it in your own published work needs a licence from its rights holders.

Image quality

The images come in the size TikTok stores for the post. That is usually the resolution the author uploaded, possibly reduced by TikTok if the original was very large. Videospeichern does not scale or compress them further. If an image looks soft, it was soft on TikTok too.

Turning the photos back into a video

Some people want the slideshow as a video file, the way it plays in the app. TikTok assembles that slideshow in the app and does not hand out a finished video file for it. To recreate it, save the images and the MP3, then combine them in any video editor. Most phone editors can make a slideshow from photos with a soundtrack in a few taps.

When it fails

  • "Only visible after signing in" means the account is private or the post is limited to friends. The guide on why private posts cannot be downloaded explains why that cannot be bypassed.
  • "Not found" means the post was deleted or the link was cut off. Copy it again.
  • The gallery is too large for one ZIP. Save the images individually instead.

For ordinary TikTok videos, the guide on saving a TikTok video on an iPhone walks through the full process on a phone.

Credit the photographer

Photo posts are often someone's own photography or artwork. Saving them for inspiration is common; reposting them without credit is not fair to the person who made them, and may infringe their rights. The guide on whether downloading social media videos is legal covers the basics.
