Why private posts cannot be downloaded

Private, protected, only visible after signing in — for a downloader they mean the same. What each platform hides, and why Videospeichern never logs in.

Sooner or later every downloader shows a message like "This post is private" or "Only visible after signing in". It can feel like a bug, especially when you can see the post perfectly well in your own app. It is not a bug. It is the line between what a platform shows the public and what it shows only to certain people, and Videospeichern deliberately stays on the public side of it. This guide explains what the messages mean, platform by platform, and why there is no workaround.

You see it, but the downloader does not

When you open a post in an app, you are signed in. The platform knows who you are, which accounts you follow, which groups you belong to and which content you are allowed to see. A post from a friend's private account appears in your feed because you are an approved follower.

Videospeichern is not signed in to anything. It reads a post the way a browser does after you log out, or the way a stranger sees it. If the platform refuses to show the post to a stranger, it refuses Videospeichern too. Nothing about your own account carries over, because Videospeichern never asks for it.

The quickest test is to open the link in a private or incognito browser window, where you are logged out. If the post shows its video there, Videospeichern can usually save it. If you see a login page, it cannot.

What counts as private, platform by platform

X (Twitter). Posts from protected accounts are only shown to approved followers. Videospeichern reports these as belonging to a protected account.

Instagram. Posts on private profiles, all Stories and all Highlights require a login. Public Reels and feed posts from public profiles work.

TikTok. Videos from private accounts and videos shared with friends only are out of reach. Public videos and photo posts work.

Facebook. Videos shared with friends or a custom audience, and posts in private or closed groups, require a login. Public page and profile videos, Reels and Watch clips work.

Threads. Posts from private profiles are only shown to approved followers.

Reddit. Posts in private communities are only visible to approved members.

Vimeo. Private, password-protected and domain-restricted videos are refused to outside requests. Public and unlisted videos with their full link work.

Snapchat. Snaps, chats and friends' stories are private by design. Only public Spotlight Snaps have a page anyone can open.

Bluesky. Most posts are public, but authors can restrict some content to signed-in viewers.

For each of these platforms, the downloader pages list what works; see the TikTok or Instagram downloader, for example.

Why Videospeichern does not simply log in

Some tools ask for your username and password, or for a copy of your browser's login cookies, so they can see what you see. Videospeichern does not, and will not, for three reasons.

Your account is worth more than a video. Handing your login to a third-party website gives that site full control of your account. Even if the site is honest, it becomes a target, and a leak exposes everyone who trusted it.

Private means private. When someone limits a post to their followers or friends, they have made a decision about who gets to keep a copy. A downloader that works around that decision works against the person who posted.

Platforms forbid it. The terms of the major platforms do not allow handing your login to third parties or automating access through your account, and doing so can get the account suspended.

So the limit is part of the design. Videospeichern works only with public posts, the same content anyone can open in a browser.

Messages that look similar but mean something else

Not every failure is about privacy.

  • "Not found" usually means the post was deleted, or the link was copied incompletely. Copy it again from the app's Share menu.
  • "Too many requests" means your connection has used its small per-minute budget. Wait for the time the message names.
  • "Could not be read right now" means the platform refused or failed to answer. Platforms occasionally turn away requests for a while; trying again a minute later often works.
  • "No video or GIF attached" means the post contains only text or photos, or the media belongs to a quoted post.

The guide on why some downloaded videos have no sound covers another common surprise that has nothing to do with privacy.

If the post is yours

If you want to save your own post from a private account, the platform itself is the right tool. Most platforms let you download your own media, or a full archive of your account, from the account settings. That route keeps your login where it belongs.

If the post belongs to a friend, ask them to send you the file. It is quicker than any workaround and respects the choice they made when they made the post private.

The short version

If a logged-out browser can play it, Videospeichern can usually save it. If a logged-out browser gets a login page, nobody should be able to save it without the owner's say. For what you may do with public posts once you have saved them, read whether downloading social media videos is legal.
